DP1 DAC/Preamp/Headphone Amp
The EXIMUS DP1 is a
high-end digital to analog converter up to 192kHz/24Bit, which can
also be used as a pure preamplifier and top-quality headphone
amplifier.
The DP1 has 6 digital
inputs including USB 2.0. Each input supports playback of files up
to 192kHz/24Bit (44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4, 192kHz). For USB this
is accomplished with the ultimate USB 2.0 solution from XMOS with
its super-quality oscillators (2 separate oscillators for the
multiples of 44.1 and 48kHz).
Alex Rasmussen of
A-Rex/Neal Feay designed the chassis cosmetics. Alex owns a
full-capacity machine shop in Santa Barbara, CA and is famous for
his remarkable industrial designs for Ayre, Constellation Audio,
Resolution Audio and many others. The basic design concept of the
chassis is the leaf. It represents springtime and with it the
month of April like our company name. The volume control, engraved
details on the top and all the lines are based on this leaf theme.
The S1 and DP1 are book matched in design and form a matched set.

"Nobody can hear digital prior to
conversion. Much design work can thus be done in the
measurement lab to assure low distortion, jitter, noise, wide
bandwidth and low Zout. Adapting the laboratory part to final
use in a comfy home rather than sterile clinic is the domain
of more artistic vision and good experience with analogue
circuitry. Simon Lee's 15 years in these trenches have clearly
paid off. His April Music Eximus DP1 performs in the league of
Igor Levin's €3.495 Antelope Audio Zodiac Gold and Mark
Mallinson's $3.995 Resonessence Invicta but for headfi is
first amongst these equals. In amp-direct use it exceeds the
Gold but lacks the convenient display and remote of the
Invicta. Considering price, features, finish and competition,
it joins the Stello U3 in winning our publication's Blue Moon
award.

"The Eximus DP1 may be small, but whether I was listening to
it as a DAC-preamp, or as a purely analog preamp fed an analog
signal from one of the other DACs I had on hand, it produced a
lively, full-bodied sound that was extremely clean,
exceptionally dynamic, and very refined. This little component
sounded big. There was also a transparency that made
the DP1’s overall sound so pristine and crystalline that I had
no hesitation in partnering it with the best stereo amp and
speakers I’ve ever had in my room"
