The new ASR Mini-Basis
Phono-Preamplifier was designed to offer performance near the
statement Basis Exclusive
at a fraction of the price. To reduce cost, the external battery
power unit used in the Basis Exclusive is replaced by a super
quiet internal power supply and a respectable 200,000 uF of
storage. The Mini-Basis is
adjustable in the input impedance (22, 100, 47,000 ohms) and in
the gain (+10dB, +16dB, +30dB, +35dB, +40dB) to use it with all
usual MM (Moving Magnet) and MC (Moving Coil) pickups.

The Exclusive version uses the
same expensive super-quiet Analog Devices microphone preamp (AD
843 SQ) used in the statement Basis Exclusive phono preamp and
also includes Magic power cord (1.5M).

"I'm not saying the ASR Mini Basis
Mk II is the best phono stage ever—it isn't. But judicious
tweaking can get you pretty far along towards the Big Boys. I
reckon the Mini gives you about 80% of the top-of-the-line
Basis Exclusive with battery option (MSRP $7900). Tweaking can
push that number up to 88%. The thing to note is it is head
and shoulders above the competition at its price point. So
far, it's the only solid-state, budget-priced phono stage I've
heard that doesn't sound like one."

"Some pieces of equipment jump at you to impress with an
overwhelming quality but over time many compromises peel out
from behind the initially flashy presentation. No such thing
is true with the Mini-Basis Exclusive. It may not wow upon
first listen but it won’t disappoint over the long run either
because it is very well balanced, well rounded and more
full-featured than is typical for mid-priced phono
preamplifiers. This is a mature, very well thought-through
piece of equipment that delivers a lot for the dollar. If your
budget for a phono preamplifier stops at $3000, the ASR
Mini-Basis Exclusive should be on your short list. I am
willing to bet that you won’t feel the need to revisit that
choice for a very long time."
